furnitureMaker™
For the past 6 months, Studio Cycle (that’s us) have been working on redefining the very concept of mass production. Utilizing the tools of technology we have proposed and attempted to prove, that it is no longer necessary to produce a million self-similar objects in the name of efficiency. Ford and his assembly line are out dated — production, en masse, no longer needs to be a staid repetition, replication, spitting out one egg after another, instead with the aid of cnc technology, each and every object created has the ability to be totally unique.
To this end, we have been eyeballs deep in Maya, scripting the furnitureMaker™ – essentially every time the script is run, a totally individual, unique object is designed, broken down into assembleble pieces, labeled, and sent to MasterCam for direct input to a CNC Mill – the end result being, for example, a coffee table that was designed and manufactured with out any human input whatsoever, and because we are utilizing the true potential of the technology, that coffee table is one-of-a-kind with no discernable loss in efficiency in comparison to traditional methods of mass production.
FurnitureMaker™ favors the concepts of family and genus over the dated, nay flaccid, concept of the edition. Why, in an age where the abundance of technology makes most things possible, is it still impossible to have your environment suit your needs and desires, instead relying on big box tastemakers and others poor ideas revolving around design.

Blowup / Breakdown

Blowup/Breakdown is an inflatable, biodegradable, septic system that addresses sanitation and environmental issues at disaster relief and refugee camp sites. Fabricated using polyactide polymer (PLA)–a novel bioplastic–the Blowup/ Breakdown system safely and ecologically isolates, treats and disposes of faecal waste in emergency situations minimizing human and environmental contact with harmful contaminants.
The waste system packs into a 24″x 12″x18″ rectangular, lightweight case for shipping. It is assembled on site using pneumatic components and folding gasket connections. Once installed, the system prevents dangerous pathogens found in faeces from percolating into the soil and water table thereby curtailing the spread of contagious disease. Waste is effectively isolated in an impermeable septic tank where, after a composting period, it is converted into nutrient-rich organic matter. With a useful life of approximately two years, Blowup/Breakdown system biodegrades into carbon, water and biomass allowing both its components and contents to safely assimilate into the surrounding soil and cause minimal environmental damage to the campsite.
